Finding the Right Golf Swing

golf swing

Finding the right golf swing is the magic key that will open all the doors to making golf more enjoyable.  It is common knowledge that the right golf swing is essential to playing good golf and it has a major influence on how well you will actually be able to play. The right golf swing is simply two basic movements and one connection that lets you 1) hit longer shots by generating more club-head speed, and 2) hit straighter shots consistently by better club-head control.  If you can imagine yourself standing in a garbage can you will understand that the right golf swing is AROUND your body. Generally, the right golf swing is a set of highly complex body movements which require precise coordination of the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, torso, hips, legs, and knees of the golfer.

Golf, if you really want to take it seriously, is actually a sport that demands a lot of energy contrary to what many people believe. Golf is like any other sport, and that means preparing to play your best. Golfers are now realizing there is a fitness component to golf, and are seriously considering a fitness routine for golf approach. Golfers are now realizing there is a fitness component to golf, and are now getting fit for golf. Golf has always been a popular game, but with the coming of Tiger Woods it certainly has become even more popular.  Now many more people are taking to the game having been inspired by the achievements of this golfing great.

Here is the goal of the golf swing: keep the golf club in a slot, essentially dissecting the shoulder on the back swing and follow through. Keep in mind, we are not going to make a perfect swing every time, but that is our goal. How do we go about keeping the swing on the correct plane and developing feel. The first answer to this question has to do with your golf swing mechanics.

If your body is not conditioned, what will tend to happen is that your game will deteriorate as you continue playing. While the golfer cannot do anything to affect the influence of the wind, other external factors and other complexities of the game, he or she can, by developing a consistent and repeatable golf swing, consistently control the flight pattern of the ball, its trajectory, the amount of spin or curve, and the distance that the ball travels. The problem is that of finding the time away from their golf game to take golf lessons.

Golfers have struggled for years with their games and have become very frustrated. Golfers are rabid and will pay any amount of money in hopes to play better golf. Golfers are no exception and apart from valuable golfing tips being widely available on the net, the other huge advantage is that it has become a lot easier to find good golf products.

The correct golf swing is not easily achieved with just a single practice session. The only way to learn the correct golf swing is through consistent practice. The reason is because the correct golf swing is a set of movements that the body finds extremely unnatural and uncomfortable.

Ball Position and Alignment

There is a term that commentators on television will often say. He came, or she came, up and out of the shot. When you hear that, it usually means that the ball has gone to the right.

So, let me tell you an example of what ‘up and out of the shot’ means, and then I’ll give you a golf technique that you can use for your own golf game.

In the downswing, both knees stay bent during the bottom of the hit. And as the golf club passes you, the arms have to get out in front of you before you can turn through.

golf stance

Now, here’s an example of a player that comes up and out of the shot. As they start down, they get out in front and their body unwinds. And they get tall in the hitting area and the spine comes up and you’ll see a push to the right.

So, here’s the golf technique. If you push to the right and you think there’s a chance that you may be coming up and out of your shot, you’ll hit it weak to the right.

A great little practice is for you to keep a little more weight on your right side and let the arms pass you before you turn through.

Now I’m going to tell you a great way to become your best teacher.

The next time you go to the practice facility, pick out a nice green patch of grass. And after you have hit balls for 10 or 15 minutes, walk back behind the golf ball and look and see where your divots are going.

If these divots are going to the left, that means your club head is coming out to in and across the golf ball.

On the other hand, if after a few minutes of practicing you look up and see that you have divots going to the right, or that you’re hitting the ball real thin, this divot would tell me that you’re swinging too much from in to out.

So, here’s a golf swing tip that will tell you how to correct it.

For those of you that find that the divots are going left, every time you get ready to hit a golf ball, simply put this club along your shoulder line and check to make sure that you’re not aiming miles over to the left. That’s probably what you’re doing. You’re standing with your shoulders aimed left and that’s why you’re seeing divots going to the left.

If you’re hitting golf balls for a few minutes and you see your divots going to the right, your shoulders are probably way over to the right.

So, here’s another golf swing tip that will help you correct it.

For those of you that discover your shoulders are going left, put the ball back in your stance a little bit.

For those of you that find out that your shoulders are aimed way right, put the ball a little further forward in your stance.

Try those golf swing tips the next time you’re out and I promise they’ll help you.

Golf Ball Hitting Tips

This will help to locating their body backside the ball at the correct spot for an efficient weight shift during the shot and for this it is also important to know golf ball position tips.

Improving your body position

So many golfers get their bodies out of position, either before the swing starts or in the backswing, that it makes it virtually impossible for them to get into a proper impact position and compress the golf ball.

Master the game of golf

Your Ball Position in stance – Your ball position is so critical to the destiny of your shot! Quite simply if the ball is too far forward in your stance or too far back then not only does that induce a slice or a push but can cause the the rest of your swing and your stance to over compensate and therefore go horribly wrong.

Eliminating Your Slice Through Mental Preparation

As all of us who play golf know, preparing mentally is as important as being in good physical shape. If your looking at ways of fixing a golf slice in your game then you need to focus mentally on your swing technique. Here are a few quick tips for your to memorize as you prepare to take each swing of a golf club.

free simple golf swing tips

  • Remove any negative thoughts from your mind and see the shot through your mind’s eye.
  • As you prepare to address the ball think in your mind how far you want to be hitting the ball and the position your club head will be taking through the swing to the ball.
  • Feel the correct path that your golf club will be taking in order to make a clean strike at impact.
  • Don’t change your breathing pattern and stay relaxed.
  • Make sure that the stance you take is comfortable to you. Shuffle your feet and shrug your shoulders to get that extra relaxed feeling.
  • For a firm foundation ensure that your feet remain still.
  • Make sure that you take a couple of practice swings so that you can feel the pace that you require for the distance you are hitting.
  • Tip yourself gently from side to side to ensure that your posture is giving you the correct balance for the swing to come.
  • Keep your lower body still whilst swinging as movement in the lower half of your body will alter your swing plane from the address to impact.
  • Start your swing and keep it steady throughout. A jerky swing will push you off line.
  • Remain focused on the ball throughtout the whole swing and to the finish, ensuring that you hit through the ball and not at it.

Muscle Memory

Practing the same routine each time you strike a golf ball will give your muscles the opportunity to remember the whole swing action making it second nature, improving your game and removing the slice altogether.

Learning how to improve a golf slice through the correct swing action is paramount to your success in being able to repeat straight golf shots time after time.

Visualizing on the Golf Course

Mental skills are a part of the game of golf which you can practice easily from your armchair when conditions are inclement outside, and also when its sunny. Don’t forget that every time you vividly imagine a perfect shot your brain.

Improve Your Golf Swing

It’s important to remember, your golf swing is what drives your score; not your clubs or ball. When you’re playing golf badly it isn’t a lot of fun. It takes a great deal of skill, mental fortitude and perseverance to excel at golf.

The Shot Routine

This is the most important part of learning the mental game. It is what we need to continually repeat and practice to become better players. It enables us to. … The aim of the pre-shot routine, is to get as prepared as you can be for executing the golf shot you intend to play. Reducing all possible variables before making the back swing will give us the required confidence to perform. The shot routine will make this preparation happen and eventually, automated.

Golf – Instruction Versus Self Teaching And Other Options

This is an interesting article about whether or not to use a golf instructor or just be self taught.  I found that it is important to get the fundamentals down early which can be very difficult through self teaching, especially when it comes to the correct grip and stance.  You can not actually see yourself swing unless you video tape yourself.  A good professional can get you into the proper swing plane for your body type and swing characteristics which you can not do bv yourself.  If you learn the correct swing ealry it will make a huge difference later on.

Golf can be fun no matter how skilled a person may be, but it’s human nature to enjoy something more if you are good and excel at it. Wouldn’t you agree? I know from personal experience that when I play well I feel much more exhilarated than when I have a bad round. Either way I enjoy the challenge of the game and always look forward to return and try to play better the next time. That’s why taking lessons will help you attain your highest level of skill and allow you to enjoy the game much faster than self teaching.

how to swing a golf club

Don’t get me wrong, I self taught as stated earlier, and learning was a real challenge but I enjoyed the ride. So if lessons are not for you right now, for whatever reason, tight budget, time constraints, etc. don’t let the joy of playing golf slip away by giving up. Self teach or learn from a friend or relative, watch video training DVD’s (check ads on this site for some excellent teaching aids) read books on golf like I did, but whatever you do don’t give up. You will be missing out on one of the greatest games ever devised by man.

There are many options to take golf lessons and the most important thing you can do is to select an instructor or teaching professional who is patient and doesn’t mind working with a new golfer. Some teachers may be very good but do not have the patience and fortitude required for the beginner. I would suggest to get a recommendation from someone who plays, if possible, or interview the proposed teacher and explain that you are a new golfer and get a feel or reaction if they will be right for you.

I actually did take a lesson or two a few years after I started playing but I was very disappointed with the teacher. All he did was watch me swing and say “OK that looks good”, no recommendations or advice on grip, set-up, tempo, timing, swing path, repetitive swing thoughts, relaxing techniques, grip pressure – NOTHING and for that reason I was soured on lessons for quite a time.

I have to admit that I changed my mind when I saw some good pros in action so please don’t let my experience sour you on the idea. I was at the local Golfsmith store about a year ago and I noted they had a supplementary section of the store just for lessons and practice. I was a bit unhappy with my game as of late and I wondered if they might be able to help. I bit the bullet so to speak and enrolled in a series of lessons for about $700. This included about ten sessions with the pro, including Video monitoring and playback, so you could see your swing in action. He was able to point out my swing deficiencies and I had direction of what I needed to correct in order to get back on track. Since you cannot see your own swing it is difficult to correct a swing fault by yourself.  A good tool to use to practice is a mirror where you can stop and look at your swing during each step of the way, but you first need to learn the proper basics or you still won’t know what you are doing right or wrong in your reflection.

A new player should minimally take a series of ten or even 20 lessons and schedule a monitored practice (which Golfsmith and some other golf schools offer ) to really put you on the right track to play. Your instructor will be able to rate your progress and you will see the results yourself as you begin to play. How quickly you improve will be the determining factor as to how many lessons an individual may need. If money is no object there are some excellent resorts that offer Instruction and Playing Packages.

These can also be found on http://www.golfdigest.com and many are built around some of the finest vacation spots in the world. For the tighter budget but still opting for a lesson or two, try the local pro golf shop or resident driving range instructor.  Remember to ask them if they are experienced in teaching the beginner and let them know that this is your requirement. Happy Golfing!

Golf Instruction

When we come to getting golf instruction we want to be sure we are getting the best. We want to get instruction that will begin making us play better.

VGS Golf

If you learned to play golf back in the day you were told that the ball must go into a different position for each club. Modern instruction has made that a lot easier for you. To place the ball correctly in your set up position, simply place the middle of the club head in the middle of your feet.

How To Play A Bunker Shot

How to Hit a Good Bunker Shot in Golf

If you want to lower your golf score, one important aspect of golf instruction that you need to master is getting out of sand traps.

This article shows how one could learn some tricks and strategies to get out of the bunkers effectively.

Most high handicap golfers dread going into the bunker. However, getting out from a bunker is basically a very easy shot….only if you know how. Always remember that you are not supposed to hit the golf ball clean. Do not make contact with the golf ball itself with the club. The sand is actually going to act as a cushion between the club head and the ball when you hit the shot out.

Most people when going in a bunker they try to pick the ball off the top of the sand with a chip shot action as though they’re on the grass. Now the problem with that is that the grass is very firm so you’re not going to dig in with the club. This means you can quite easily hit the golf ball first and get a decent strike out of it.

In the case of a bunker shot, most people tend to just duff it in front of themselves because the sand is fluffy and it breaks up. In order to hit a good bunker shot, what you’ve got to remember is that you’re actually going to take out the same amount from underneath the ball.

For good bunker shot, when you swing the golf club, the swing needs to be a lot longer and have a better tempo than with a chip shot, because you’ve got to allow for the sand which you’re going to take out with your shot. You must allow for that sand to actually take the power out of the shot.

If the ball is sitting up on the surface, your sand wedge takes less sand with it during your swing. If it’s buried you’d have to dig deeper, and the club will barely make contact with the ball. The following steps would help you to consistently hit good bunker shot:

1) As you are aware, the sand wedge has a wide sole. This is called the bounce. It will make is easier for you to lift the ball out of the sand and get it up quickly.

2) Place your feet squarely in the sand and make sure you have solid footing and balance. You have to take a firm swing to overcome the resistance of the sand.

3) Use an imaginary line just ahead of your ball. Open the club face and aim at a point about 3 inches behind the ball if it is sitting on top of the sand. The sand wedge would slide through the sand just under the ball and would loft the ball over onto the green.

4) If the ball is partially buried in the sand, focus at a point just behind the ball taking more sand with the swing

5) With all bunker shots, allow your follow through of the club head higher than the front of the bunker.

Bunker Shot Fundamentals

Greenside Bunker Shot Fundamentals. • This shot should be performed using a sand wedge or lob wedge. • Open your stance and dig your feet into the sand. This helps you become more stable. • Position ball approximately even with the inside heel of your front foot.

The Sand Wedge Shot

The length of the sand wedge shot will determine how much you need to open the club face and how hard you must swing. Obviously, the longer the bunker shot the harder you must swing but, as much as possible, you should keep your swing the same.

Beginning Golf Instruction Tips – the Approach Shot and the Chip Shot

Beginning Golf Instruction Tips: Getting A Feel For The Approach Shot
 by: Blair MacGregor

After mastering the concept of the tee shot, the next step as a golf instruction beginner is to move on to the short game and what are known as approach shots.

For most people, these shots will be increasingly more difficult because they require more skill & patience than a simple tee shot.

There are a variety of approach shots, all of which are used in different situations depending on where your initial shot lands on the course. However, your intention with these shots is always to land on the green.

The pitch shot is an approach shot that is played from farther away than the other shots. Using a wedge, the ideal pitch shot is the perfect combination of enough swing momentum to carry your shot through, but not enough to send it sailing over the green. Trajectory will be low to average depending on how far you are from the cup and you want to make sure the ball doesn’t roll too far.

You must start off with a slightly open stance, positioning your right foot directly across from the ball. When following through on a pitch shot, always make sure to keep your backswing as short as you possibly can. Failure to keep your backswing in check will usually cause you to instinctively put the brakes on your shot while accelerating, which is a definite no-no. You want to have enough confidence in your wedge to let the club do the work for you: don’t think you have to assist the ball through the air.

Another approach shot is known as the chip shot. You’ll need to use a chip shot once you’re within about 30 yards from the green, usually after a fairway drive or tee shot. The idea is for this shot to have a much shorter trajectory, so you will need to use a less lofted club. Proper weight distribution is paramount to getting off a decent chip shot. If you’re a right handed golfer, you want to put the majority of your weight on the left side and hold this position through the duration of your shot.

There are generally two kinds of chip shots that we want to concern ourselves with. The first one is what’s known as the bump-and-run shot, and the second is a flop shot. The Bump And Run is usually taken with an 8, 7 or 6 iron club and with the clubface hooded. That way your shot will have have less loft. You also want to have just enough power in your backswing to follow through. The flop shot is used when you want to get over an obstacle like a rough patch or a sand trap, so you’re going to want to have a much higher trajectory in order to push the ball over. Open up your stance and follow through as far under the ball as possible to try and pop it up, and you’ll keep your ball away from the danger zones with a good position for a subsequent shot.
